Iran Declines U.S. Negotiation Under ‘Maximum Pressure’: Foreign Minister

Tehran: Iran will not engage in direct negotiations with the United States under the current 'maximum pressure' policy, according to Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. Araqchi emphasized that discussions would only occur under equal conditions, free from threats, and that the U.S. must recognize the ineffectiveness of its pressure strategy.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Araqchi's comments were made during an exclusive interview with Iran Newspaper, published on Thursday. Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump reinstated his 'maximum pressure' campaign against Iran, a policy initially launched in 2018 when he withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal. Trump, now in his second term, has also expressed a willingness to negotiate a new agreement with Iran.

Araqchi stated that entering negotiations under the pressure campaign would signify a weak position for Iran, yielding no achievements. He stressed that proving the ineffectiveness of the U.S. strategy is essential before engaging in talks under equal conditions. Araqchi clarified that Iran's approach is not passive but involves strategic initiatives.

He highlighted that Iran is not adopting a passive stance and is actively planning for potential nuclear negotiations, including discussions with European nations. Araqchi also noted that Iran will continue its negotiations with Europe and hold consultations with Russia and China.

In conclusion, Araqchi reiterated that the U.S. must lift sanctions against Iran. Direct negotiations will only happen when Iran is assured of equal conditions, free from pressure, and when the national interests of its people are safeguarded.
