Iran Permits Foreign Social Media Platforms Under Governance Rules.

Tehran: Foreign social media platforms must accept existing laws in Iran to operate in the Islamic Republic without restrictions, a member of Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace has stated. Reza Taghipour highlighted the necessity for these platforms to adhere to local regulations, reflecting the recent remarks by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who has emphasized the protection of Iranians’ psychological security in cyberspace.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Taghipour mentioned that social media users in European countries are governed by the General Data Protection Regulation. He noted that part of this regulation addresses fake news, holding platforms accountable for managing such issues through software and artificial intelligence. Taghipour remarked on the global challenge posed by social media warfare, indicating that Iran is also vulnerable to this phenomenon.

He further elaborated that this new form of warfare affects a wide array of entities, including governments, organi
zations, companies, celebrities, children, adults, universities, and even governmental and educational institutions. The universal access and ease of use of social media, compared to previous tools, have contributed to its role as a tool for warfare, he explained.
