Madrid: Spain's Foreign Minister has accused Israel of employing a military strategy in southern Lebanon similar to its approach in Gaza, asserting that such actions hinder normal relations with the European Union amid ongoing human rights violations. Jose Manuel Albares conveyed this stance during an interview with public broadcaster RTVE, highlighting the detrimental impact on Lebanese citizens' daily lives, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and violations of international law, including forced displacements and attacks on UN forces in Lebanon. Albares argues that these actions suggest Israel is seeking control over a part of a sovereign state, a move he deems serious for both Middle East stability and Israel's own security.
According to TRTworld.com, Albares cautioned that Israel's current strategy is leading the Middle East towards ongoing conflict. He reiterated Spain's advocacy for the EU to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel, a position he plans to present at the upcoming foreign ministers meeting. Albares emphasized that Israel must recognize it cannot maintain normal relations while human rights are blatantly violated.
In another aspect of regional conflict, Albares stated that Spain will abstain from participating in any military operations in the Strait of Hormuz, despite ongoing tensions and a temporary ceasefire between Iran, the US, and Israel. Favoring diplomatic solutions, he expressed Spain's commitment to peaceful resolutions and the return of the waterway as a free and secure passage for all vessels. He also suggested that any future verification mechanisms should be led by the United Nations.
Albares further expressed concern over rising military tensions between Iran and the United States and urged Iran to engage in peace talks in Pakistan to prevent further escalation.
