Tehran: International leaders have welcomed Iran's announcement that the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened to commercial shipping, describing it as a positive step.
According to Islamic Republic News Agency, UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres remarked that this move could help ease tensions if fully implemented. He expressed his approval on his X account, stating, "I welcome Iran's announcements that the Strait of Hormuz is completely open for all commercial vessels for the remainder of the ceasefire. This is a step in the right direction." He further emphasized the UN's position, advocating for the full restoration of international navigational rights and freedoms in the Strait, respected by all parties. Guterres also expressed hope that this measure, along with the ceasefire, would foster confidence among the involved parties and enhance the ongoing dialogue facilitated by Pakistan.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed similar sentiments, labeling the development as "good news" on his X account. He stressed the need for the solution to be enduring and viable, without any tolls or route restrictions. Starmer also announced a joint plan with France and other international partners to ensure freedom of navigation, highlighting the necessity for peace, stability, and a permanent ceasefire in the region.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb underscored the importance of diplomatic engagement, asserting that Finland is prepared to contribute towards a solution that ensures regional stability and respects international law. "We welcome Iran's announcement on opening the Strait. Lasting solutions require diplomacy," he noted.
In the maritime domain, Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), mentioned that technical verification is currently underway. He stated, "We are currently verifying the recent announcement related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, in terms of its compliance with freedom of navigation for all merchant vessels and secure passage using the IMO established traffic separation scheme."
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would be completely open for the remaining duration of the ceasefire. He communicated this decision on his X account, stating, "In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of the ceasefire."
