Riau: In the heart of Indonesia’s vast tropical landscapes, the province of Riau, known for its rich peatlands and biodiversity, is emerging as a beacon of climate leadership thanks to a new initiative that places local leadership and customary knowledge at the center of climate action, in line with national policies. Indonesia’s national climate strategy aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. A key component of this strategy is for forests to absorb 140 million tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to taking 30 million cars off the road. Riau’s contribution to this goal is critical.
